The Mexican American War (1846-1848)
The Mexican American war began when Texas fought for independence from Mexico. Either though the new U.S territory had just been part of Mexico and the Mexican Americans that lived there had been there for generations, European Americans downgraded Mexicans to second class status. English became the official language and Mexicans were only given low paid work. Schools were segregated and landlords and employers would put up signs saying “No Mexicans need apply”. Certain towns and cities restricted Mexican celebrations
and worst of all, the United States broke its promise to the Mexican Americans that they would keep all rights to their land. The U.S gave an abundance of land to the European Americans through the courts. Mexican Americans were treated so terribly and were at their farthest from living their American Dream.("Mexican Americans")
